Union County is a one of the county from South Dakota's 66 counties, located in Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. The county has a population of 12584 as per the 2000 census data. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 14131, It is the 13th largest county by population in the U.S. state of South Dakota. It covers total area of 467.08 square miles (1209.73 sq km), of which, 460.38 square miles (1192.38 sq km) of it is land and 6.7 square miles (17.35 sq km) of it is water, it is the fifth smallest in terms of geographical size.

The population density was 27.3 people per square mile (10.54/kmē), it is the tenth most populated county in terms of population density. There were 5345 housing units at an average density of 11.6 per square mile (4.48/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.53 persons, and the average family size was 3.02 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 27% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 99.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.3 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 14131, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 13534 White, 64 Black or African American, 72 American Indian, 358 Asian, 2 Native Hawaiian, and 101 from two or more races.
