Union County is a county located in the United States of South Carolina. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 29881 inhabitants. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 27672, It is South Carolina's 13th least populous county. It is spread over 515.92 mi˛ (1336.23 sq km), of which, 514.12 square miles (1331.56 sq km ) of it is land and 1.8 square miles (4.66 sq km) of it is water, giving it the 15th smallest by total area among South Carolina's county.

The population density was 58.1 people per square mile (22.43/km˛), it is South Carolina's 29th most densely populated county. There were 13351 housing units at an average density of 26 per square mile (10.04/km˛). The average household size was 2.44 persons, and the average family size was 2.93 persons. In the county Population was distributed with 23.8% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 24.4% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 89 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.3 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 27672, The racial makeup of the county was 67.53% White, 31.26% Black or African American, 0.18% American Indian, 0.22% Asian, 0.04% Native Hawaiian, and 0.77% from two or more races.
