The county extends throughout a territory of 317.12 sq mi (821.34 kmē ), of which, 316.73 square miles (820.33 kmē) of it is land and 0.39 square miles (1.01 kmē) of it is water, it is the fourth smallest by area in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania.

The population density was 131.4 people per square mile (50.73/kmē), it is Pennsylvania's 35th most densely populated county. In the county the population was spread out, with 20.1% under the age of 18, 13.9% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 80.7 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 77.8 females.
