Union County is a county located in North Carolina, in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. The population of county in 2000 stood at 123677 as per the Census data. Its population was estimated at 193255 in July 2008, making it the ninth most populous county in North Carolina. The county encompasses an area of 639.59 sq mi (1656.53 sq km ), of which, 637.37 square miles (1650.78 sq km) of it is land and 2.22 square miles (5.75 sq km) of it is water, makes it the 26th largest by total area in North Carolina.


According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 123677 people, 43390 households, and 34280 families residing in the county. The population density was 194 people per square mile (74.9/kmē), making its North Carolina's 24th most densely populated county. There were 45695 housing units at an average density of 71.7 per square mile (27.68/kmē). The average household size was 2.81 and the average family size was 3.15. In the county Age distribution was 28.1% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 99.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.1 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 193255, The racial makeup of the county was 84.8% White, 12.16% Black or African American, 0.48% American Indian, 1.5% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, and 1.02% from two or more races.
