Union County is a United States county located in the United States of New Mexico. The population of the county was 4174 as per the 2000 census data. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 3777, It is the fourth smallest in terms of population. The county extends throughout a territory of 3830.79 mi˛ (9921.7 sq km ), of which, 3830 square miles (9919.65 sq km) of it is land and 0.79 square miles (2.05 sq km) of it is water, it is the 15th largest in terms of geographical size.

As of the census of 2000, there were 4174 people, 1733 households, and 1177 families residing in the county. The population density was 1.1 people per square mile (0.42/km˛), it is New Mexico's fourth least densely populated county. There were 2225 housing units at an average density of 0.6 per square mile (0.23/km˛). The average household size was 2.4 persons, and the average family size was 2.99 persons. In the Union County, 27.3% of the population was under the age of 18, 6.3% were 18 to 24, 24.6% were 25 to 44, 24.1% were 45 to 64, and 17.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 97 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.3 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 3777, The racial makeup of the county was 96.98% White, 0.03% Black or African American, 1.38% American Indian, 0.5% Asian, 0.11% Native Hawaiian, and 1.01% from two or more races.
