Union County is a county located in New Jersey, in the Northeastern Region (Mid-Atlantic) of United States. In 2000, the population was 522541. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 523249, It is New Jersey's seventh most populous county. The county comprises an area of 105.46 mi˛ (273.14 sq km), of which, 103.29 square miles (267.52 sq km) of it is land and 2.17 square miles (5.62 sq km) of it is water, it is the second smallest in terms of geographical size.

The population density was 5059 people per square mile (1953.29/km˛), it is third most densely populated county in New Jersey. There were 192945 housing units at an average density of 1868 per square mile (721.24/km˛). The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size was 3.28. The population's age distribution was 24.9% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 31.3% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 92.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.9 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 523249, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 71.06% White, 22.63% Black or African American, 0.37% American Indian, 4.49% Asian, 0.1% Native Hawaiian, and 1.35% from two or more races.
