Union County is one of the 99 county of Iowa, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. The population of the county was 12309 as per the 2000 census data. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 12261, It is the 61st largest county by population in the U.S. state of Iowa. It is spread over 425.95 square miles (1103.21 sq km), of which, 424.39 square miles (1099.17 sq km ) of it is land and 1.57 square miles (4.07 sq km) of it is water, it is the ninth smallest in terms of geographical size.

The population density was 29 people per square mile (11.2/kmē), it is 48th most densely populated county in Iowa. Age range in the county was well distributed with 23.3% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 24% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 92.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 12261, The racial makeup of the county was 12018 White, 84 Black or African American, 25 American Indian, 55 Asian, 0 Native Hawaiian, and 79 from two or more races.
