As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 18191, It is 63rd most populous county in Illinois. It covers total area of 422.13 sq mi (1093.31 sq km), of which, 416.16 square miles (1077.85 sq km) of it is land and 5.97 square miles (15.46 sq km) of it is water, makes it the 32nd smallest by total area in Illinois.
