Ulster County, New York is a county located in the Northeastern Region (Mid-Atlantic) of United States. In 2000, the population was 177749. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 181670, It is 20th most populous county in New York. It covers total area of 1160.76 miē (3006.35 kmē), of which, 1126.48 square miles (2917.57 kmē) of it is land and 34.28 square miles (88.78 kmē) of it is water, it is the 18th largest by area in the U.S. state of New York.

As of the census of 2000, there were 177749 people, 67499 households, and 43563 families residing in the county. The population density was 157.8 people per square mile (60.93/kmē), giving it the 25th most densely populated county among the New York. There were 77656 housing units at an average density of 68.9 per square mile (26.6/kmē). The average household size was 2.47 persons, and the average family size was 3.03 persons. In the county Age distribution was 23.5% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 24.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 100.9 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 103.5 females. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 181670, The racial makeup of the county was 89.77% White, 6.47% Black or African American, 0.33% American Indian, 1.67% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, and 1.73% from two or more races.
