The July 2008 population estimate is 56187, It is 34th most populous county in Michigan. It is spread over 913.82 square miles (2366.78 square kilometre), of which, 812.43 square miles (2104.18 square kilometre ) of it is land and 101.39 square miles (262.6 square kilometre) of it is water, makes it the 31st largest by total area in Michigan.
