It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 90221, giving it the fifth largest population among Alabama. The city spans an area of 66.7 sq mi (172.75 square kilometre), of which, 56.24 square miles (145.66 square kilometre) of it is land and 10.46 square miles (27.09 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the ninth largest by size in Alabama. It is ranks fifth in the size of its inland waterways in Alabama.
