As of July 2008, the estimated population of the city is 36233, It is the seventh largest by population in the U.S. state of Mississippi. The city extends throughout a territory of 51.42 miē (133.18 kmē ), of which, 51.11 square miles (132.37 kmē) of it is land and 0.32 square miles (0.83 kmē) of it is water, making it Mississippi's third largest by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 34211 people, 13395 households, and 9105 families residing in the city.
