Tuolumne County is one of the 58 county of California, located towards the Western Region (Pacific) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 54501. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 55644, making it the 17th least populous county in California. The county extends throughout a territory of 2274.34 mi˛ (5890.51 square kilometre ), of which, 2235.41 square miles (5789.69 square kilometre) of it is land and 38.93 square miles (100.83 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 23rd largest by area in the U.S. state of California.

As of the census of 2000, there were 54501 people in the county, organized into 21004 households, and 14249 families living in the county. The population density was 24.4 people per square mile (9.42/km˛), making its California's 14th least densely populated county. There were 28336 housing units at an average density of 12.7 per square mile (4.9/km˛). The average household size was 2.36 people, and the average family size was 2.82 people. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 20.7% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 27.9% from 45 to 64, and 18.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 111.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 112.2 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 55644, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 50801 White, 1340 Black or African American, 1149 American Indian, 677 Asian, 104 Native Hawaiian, and 1573 from two or more races.
