Troy City is one of the city of Rensselaer County, New York, located towards the Northeastern Region (Mid-Atlantic) of United States. Troy City had an official population of 49170 in 2000. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 47459, It is the 19th largest by population in the U.S. state of New York. The city has a total area of 11.02 sq mi (28.54 kmē), of which, 10.41 square miles (26.96 kmē) of it is land and 0.6 square miles (1.55 kmē) of it is water, it is the 50th largest by area in the U.S. state of New York.

As of the census of 2000, there were 49170 people, 19996 households, and 10729 families residing in the city. The population density was 4721.8 people per square mile (1823.1/kmē), it is 137th most densely populated city in New York. There were 23093 housing units at an average density of 2218.3 per square mile (856.49/kmē). The average household size was 2.26 and the average family size was 2.97. In the city the population was distributed as follows: 22.1% under the age of 18, 17.6% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 18.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 98 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96 males. The median age is 31.7 years, The median age of males was 29.2 years, for females the median age was 34.7 years. The racial makeup of the city was 39443 White, 5612 Black or African American, 140 American Indian, 1717 Asian, 20 Native Hawaiian, 1155 from two or more races and 1083 Ohter races.
