Traverse County is one of the 87 county of Minnesota, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. The county has a population of 4134 as per the 2000 census data. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 3660, It is the smallest county by population in the U.S. state of Minnesota. It has total area of 585.96 sq mi (1517.63 kmē), of which, 574.09 square miles (1486.89 kmē) of it is land and 11.87 square miles (30.74 kmē) of it is water, it is the 58th largest by area in the U.S. state of Minnesota.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 4134 residents, 1717 households, and 1129 families in the county. The population density was 7.2 people per square mile (2.78/kmē), it is Minnesota's seventh least densely populated county. There were 2199 housing units at an average density of 3.8 per square mile (1.47/kmē). The average household size was 2.34 people, and the average family size was 2.97 people. In the Traverse County, 25.3% of the population was under the age of 18, 5.6% were 18 to 24, 21.7% were 25 to 44, 21.2% were 45 to 64, and 26.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.8 males. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 3660, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 95.52% White, 0.05% Black or African American, 3.58% American Indian, 0.3% Asian, 0.08% Native Hawaiian, and 0.46% from two or more races.
