Transylvania County is a one of the county from North Carolina's 100 counties, located in Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Transylvania County is home to 29334 inhabitants. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 30187, making it the 31st least populous county in North Carolina. The county spans an area of 380.56 sq mi (985.65 sq km), of which, 378.39 square miles (980.03 sq km) of it is land and 2.17 square miles (5.62 sq km) of it is water, it is the 29th smallest by area in the U.S. state of North Carolina.

As of the census of 2000, there were 29334 people, 12320 households, and 8666 families living in the county. The population density was 77.5 people per square mile (29.92/kmē), making it the 62nd most densely populated county in North Carolina. There were 15553 housing units at an average density of 41.1 per square mile (15.87/kmē). The average household size was 2.3 persons, and the average family size was 2.74 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 20.4% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 23.1% from 25 to 44, 26.9% from 45 to 64, and 21.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 92.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.5 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 30187, The racial makeup of the county was 93.06% White, 4.77% Black or African American, 0.32% American Indian, 0.52% Asian, 0.04% Native Hawaiian, and 1.29% from two or more races.
