Torrance County is one of the 33 county of New Mexico, located towards the Western Region (Mountain) of United States. The county has a population of 16911 as per the 2000 census data. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 16269, giving it the 23rd largest population among New Mexico's county. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3345.81 mi˛ (8665.61 square kilometre), of which, 3344.81 square miles (8663.02 square kilometre) of it is land and 1 square miles (2.59 square kilometre) of it is water, making it New Mexico's 20th largest county by total area.

The population density was 5.1 people per square mile (1.97/km˛), it is 21st most densely populated county in New Mexico. In the county Age distribution was 30.4% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 9.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 94.8 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 94.2 females. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 16269, The racial makeup of the county was 92.48% White, 2.36% Black or African American, 2.64% American Indian, 0.44% Asian, 0.14% Native Hawaiian, and 1.94% from two or more races.
