Tompkins County, New York is a county located in the Northeastern Region (Mid-Atlantic) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 96501 inhabitants. Its population was estimated at 101136 in July 2008, It is New York's 28th most populous county. The county comprises an area of 491.63 mi˛ (1273.32 sq km), of which, 476.05 square miles (1232.96 sq km) of it is land and 15.57 square miles (40.33 sq km) of it is water, making it the 15th smallest by size in New York.

As of the census of 2000, there were 96501 residents, 36420 households, and 19120 families in the county. The population density was 202.7 people per square mile (78.26/km˛), it would be the 23rd most densely populated county in the U.S. state of New York. There were 38625 housing units at an average density of 81.1 per square mile (31.31/km˛). It has an average household size was 2.32 persons, and the average family size was 2.93 persons. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 19% under the age of 18, 26% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 19.3% from 45 to 64, and 9.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 97.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.2 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 101136, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 83.52% White, 4.01% Black or African American, 0.35% American Indian, 9.86% Asian, 0.04% Native Hawaiian, and 2.22% from two or more races.
