The July 2008 population estimate is 7102, making it Nebraska's 41st largest county. It has total area of 396.25 miē (1026.28 kmē), of which, 393.81 square miles (1019.96 kmē) of it is land and 2.44 square miles (6.32 kmē) of it is water, it is the sixth smallest in terms of geographical size.
