Thomas County is one of the 105 county of Kansas, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. Thomas County had an official population of 8180 in 2000. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 7277, making it Kansas's 52nd largest county. The county encompasses an area of 1074.9 square miles (2783.98 square kilometre ), of which, 1074.78 square miles (2783.67 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.11 square miles (0.28 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the tenth largest by area in the U.S. state of Kansas.

As of the census of 2000, there were 8180 people in the county, organized into 3226 households, and 2126 families residing in the county. The population density was 7.6 people per square mile (2.93/kmē), it is 62nd most densely populated county in Kansas. There were 3562 housing units at an average density of 3.3 per square mile (1.27/kmē). The average household size was 2.45 people, and the average family size was 3.04 people. In the Thomas County, 26.3% of the population was under the age of 18, 13.5% were 18 to 24, 24.4% were 25 to 44, 21.2% were 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.5 males.
