Its area is just over 42143.27 square miles (109150.57 kmē), of which, 41217.12 square miles (106751.85 kmē) of it is land and 926.15 square miles (2398.72 kmē) of it is water, makes it the 15th smallest by total area in United States.

The population density was 138 people per square mile (53.28/kmē), making its United States's 19th most densely populated state. There were 2439443 housing units at an average density of 59.2 per square mile (22.86/kmē). The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.99. In the state the population is diverse age-wise, with 24.6% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.6 males. The median age is 35.9 years, The median age of males was 34.5 years, for females the median age was 37.2 years.
