According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Taylor County is home to 16089 inhabitants. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 16158, It is 36th most populous county in West Virginia. The county has a total area of 175.69 square miles (455.04 sq km), of which, 172.78 square miles (447.5 sq km) of it is land and 2.91 square miles (7.54 sq km) of it is water, it is the fifth smallest by area in the U.S. state of West Virginia.

The population density was 93.1 people per square mile (35.95/kmē), it is 16th most densely populated county in West Virginia. There were 7125 housing units at an average density of 41.2 per square mile (15.91/kmē). The average household size was 2.47 persons, and the average family size was 2.95 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 22.9% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 15.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.9 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 16158, The racial makeup of the county was 97.7% White, 1.08% Black or African American, 0.2% American Indian, 0.24% Asian, 0.04% Native Hawaiian, and 0.74% from two or more races.
