Tappahannock Town is a town in the Essex County, Virginia, United States. The population of the town was 2068 as per the 2000 census data. The town's estimated population as of July 2008 was 2195, making it the 183rd most populous in Virginia. The town extends throughout a territory of 2.68 sq mi (6.94 kmē ), of which, 2.61 square miles (6.76 kmē) of it is land and 0.08 square miles (0.21 kmē) of it is water, it is the 198th largest by area in the U.S. state of Virginia.

As of the census of 2000, there were 2068 people in the town, organized into 857 households, and 495 families living in the town. The population density was 793.6 people per square mile (306.41/kmē), it is Virginia's 222nd most densely populated town. There were 946 housing units at an average density of 362.5 per square mile (139.96/kmē). The average household size was 2.23 persons, and the average family size was 2.91 persons. In the town the population was spread out, with 22.4% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 27% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 21.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 78.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 73.6 males. The median age of the town's population was 38.7 years, the median age of male residents at 36.1 and the median age of female residents at 40.3. The racial makeup of the town was 54.64% White, 41.59% Black or African American, 0.1% American Indian, 2.51% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, 1.02% from two or more races and 0.15% Other races.
