Taos County is one of the 33 county of New Mexico, located towards the Western Region (Mountain) of United States. In 2000, county's population was 29979 inhabitants. Its population was estimated at 31546 in July 2008, It is the 14th largest in terms of population. The county comprises an area of 2204.62 sq mi (5709.94 sq km), of which, 2203.17 square miles (5706.18 sq km) of it is land and 1.45 square miles (3.76 sq km) of it is water, giving it the eighth smallest by total area among New Mexico's county.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 29979 people, 12675 households, and 7755 families living in the county. The population density was 13.6 people per square mile (5.25/kmē), it is tenth most densely populated county in New Mexico. There were 17404 housing units at an average density of 7.9 per square mile (3.05/kmē). The average household size was 2.34 persons, and the average family size was 2.98 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 24.5% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 28.8% from 45 to 64, and 12.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.7 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 31546, The racial makeup of the county was 28351 White, 231 Black or African American, 2326 American Indian, 160 Asian, 57 Native Hawaiian, and 421 from two or more races.
