The July 2008 population estimate is 17690, giving it the 39th largest population among Iowa's county. The county has a total area of 722.37 square miles (1870.93 sq km), of which, 721.3 square miles (1868.16 sq km) of it is land and 1.07 square miles (2.77 sq km) of it is water, it is the tenth largest by area in the U.S. state of Iowa.

In July 2008, its estimated population was 17690, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 90.83% White, 0.68% Black or African American, 6.98% American Indian, 0.19% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 1.31% from two or more races.
