Tallapoosa County is a one of the county from Alabama's 67 counties, located in Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 41475 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 40773, making it Alabama's 31st largest county. The county spans an area of 766.23 mi˛ (1984.53 sq km), of which, 717.93 square miles (1859.43 sq km) of it is land and 48.3 square miles (125.1 sq km) of it is water, giving it the 25th largest by total area among Alabama's county. It is ranks fifth in the size of its inland waterways in Alabama.

As of the census of 2000, there were 41475 people, 16656 households, and 11807 families residing in the county. The population density was 57.8 people per square mile (22.32/km˛), making it the 29th most densely populated county in Alabama. There were 20510 housing units at an average density of 28.6 per square mile (11.04/km˛). The average household size was 2.44 people, and the average family size was 2.94 people. In the county the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 110.5 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 116.2 females. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 40773, The racial makeup of the county was 72.92% White, 25.85% Black or African American, 0.3% American Indian, 0.28% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 0.64% from two or more races.
