Switzerland County, Indiana


Switzerland County is one of the 92 county of Indiana, located towards the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. In 2000, the population was 9065. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 9696, making it the fifth least populous county in Indiana. It covers total area of 223.52 sq mi (578.91 sq km), of which, 221.18 square miles (572.85 sq km) of it is land and 2.34 square miles (6.06 sq km) of it is water, it is the seventh smallest in terms of geographical size.

As of the census of 2000, there were 9065 residents, 3435 households, and 2540 families in the county. The population density was 41 people per square mile (15.83/kmē), making it the ninth least densely populated county in Indiana. There were 4226 housing units at an average density of 19.1 per square mile (7.37/kmē). The average household size was 2.61 people, and the average family size was 3.03 people. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 26.3% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 28% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 12.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 101.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.2 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 9696, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 9564 White, 60 Black or African American, 16 American Indian, 7 Asian, 1 Native Hawaiian, and 48 from two or more races.
