Sweet Grass County is one of the 56 county of Montana, located towards the Western Region (Mountain) of United States. In 2000, the population was 3609. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 3790, It is the 18th smallest in terms of population. The county comprises an area of 1862 sq mi (4822.56 square kilometre), of which, 1855.08 square miles (4804.64 square kilometre) of it is land and 6.92 square miles (17.92 square kilometre) of it is water, making it Montana's 37th largest county by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 3609 people, 1476 households, and 987 families living in the county. The population density was 1.9 people per square mile (0.73/kmē), it is the 33rd most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Montana. There were 1860 housing units at an average density of 1 per square mile (0.39/kmē). The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3. Age range in the county was well distributed with 26% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 26.4% from 45 to 64, and 17.6% who were 65 or older.
