Swain County, North Carolina is a county located in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 12968. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 13512, It is the 12th smallest county by population in the U.S. state of North Carolina. It has total area of 540.64 miē (1400.25 kmē), of which, 528.1 square miles (1367.77 kmē) of it is land and 12.54 square miles (32.48 kmē) of it is water, it is the 39th largest in terms of geographical size.

As of the census of 2000, there were 12968 residents, 5137 households, and 3631 families in the county. The population density was 24.6 people per square mile (9.5/kmē), making its North Carolina's fourth least densely populated county. There were 7105 housing units at an average density of 13.5 per square mile (5.21/kmē). The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.91. In the county the population was spread out, with 24.3% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 25.4% from 45 to 64, and 15.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 13512, The racial makeup of the county was 9426 White, 202 Black or African American, 3522 American Indian, 31 Asian, 2 Native Hawaiian, and 329 from two or more races.
