According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 691.9 mi˛ (1792.01 sq km), of which, 687.64 square miles (1780.98 sq km) of it is land and 4.26 square miles (11.03 sq km) of it is water, it is the 22nd smallest by area in the U.S. state of Florida.

For every 100 males there were 104.8 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 107.7 females. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 39802, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 86.13% White, 11.63% Black or African American, 0.44% American Indian, 0.58% Asian, 0.04% Native Hawaiian, and 1.18% from two or more races.
