Sussex County is one of the 135 county of Virginia, located towards the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. It is home to over 12504 people (2000 census). As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 12148, It is 28th least populous county in Virginia. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 492.83 square miles (1276.42 kmē), of which, 490.73 square miles (1270.98 kmē) of it is land and 2.1 square miles (5.44 kmē) of it is water, it is the 29th largest by area in the U.S. state of Virginia.

The population density was 25.5 people per square mile (9.85/kmē), it is the seventh least populated county in terms of population density. There were 4653 housing units at an average density of 9.5 per square mile (3.67/kmē). The average household size was 2.41 persons, and the average family size was 2.94 persons. Age range in the county was well distributed with 19.6% under the age of 18, 9% from 18 to 24, 34.4% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 13.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 135.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 142.3 males. Its population was estimated at 12148 in July 2008, The racial makeup of the county was 4899 White, 7086 Black or African American, 19 American Indian, 36 Asian, 2 Native Hawaiian, and 106 from two or more races.
