Surry County, Virginia


Surry County is one of the 135 county of Virginia, located towards the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 6829 inhabitants. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 7128, making it Virginia's 14th smallest county. The county spans an area of 310.31 mi˛ (803.7 sq km), of which, 279.09 square miles (722.84 sq km) of it is land and 31.22 square miles (80.86 sq km) of it is water, it is the 70th largest in terms of geographical size.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 6829 people, 2619 households, and 1916 families residing in the county. The population density was 24.5 people per square mile (9.46/km˛), it would be the sixth least densely populated county in the U.S. state of Virginia. There were 3294 housing units at an average density of 11.8 per square mile (4.56/km˛). The average household size was 2.61 persons, and the average family size was 3.09 persons. In the county Age distribution was 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 106.7 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 108.7 females. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 7128, The racial makeup of the county was 3694 White, 3323 Black or African American, 17 American Indian, 21 Asian, 1 Native Hawaiian, and 72 from two or more races.
