Sumter County is one of the 46 county of South Carolina, located towards the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. In 2000, county's population was 104646 inhabitants. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 104148, making it the 15th most populous county in South Carolina. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 682.03 mi˛ (1766.45 square kilometre), of which, 665.41 square miles (1723.4 square kilometre) of it is land and 16.63 square miles (43.07 square kilometre) of it is water, giving it the 23rd largest by total area among South Carolina's county.

In the county the population was distributed as follows: 28.1% under the age of 18, 10.5% from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 104148, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 49.61% White, 47.64% Black or African American, 0.35% American Indian, 1.09% Asian, 0.07% Native Hawaiian, and 1.25% from two or more races.
