Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 32449, It is 53rd most populous county in Georgia. The county has a total area of 492.54 mi˛ (1275.67 sq km), of which, 485.28 square miles (1256.87 sq km) of it is land and 7.26 square miles (18.8 sq km) of it is water, making it Georgia's 32nd largest county by total area.

The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 32449, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 48.7% White, 49.59% Black or African American, 0.34% American Indian, 0.74% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 0.61% from two or more races.
