Sumter County is a county located in Florida, in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. The county has a population of 53345 as per the 2000 census data. Its population was estimated at 74721 in July 2008, It is the 36th largest county by population in the U.S. state of Florida. It has total area of 580.31 square miles (1503 kmē), of which, 545.73 square miles (1413.43 kmē) of it is land and 34.58 square miles (89.56 kmē) of it is water, making it the 11th smallest by size in Florida.

The population density was 97.7 people per square mile (37.72/kmē), it is the 35th most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Florida.
