Sumter County is a county in the United States of Alabama. Sumter County had an official population of 14798 in 2000. Its population was estimated at 13266 in July 2008, giving it the eighth smallest population among Alabama's county. It has total area of 913.3 square miles (2365.44 kmē), of which, 904.94 square miles (2343.78 kmē) of it is land and 8.37 square miles (21.68 kmē) of it is water, it is the 14th largest in terms of geographical size.

As of the census of 2000, there were 14798 people, 5708 households, and 3665 families living in the county. The population density was 16.4 people per square mile (6.33/kmē), it is third least densely populated county in Alabama. There were 6953 housing units at an average density of 7.7 per square mile (2.97/kmē). The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.26. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 29.1% under the age of 18, 12.2% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 19.5% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 84.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 78.2 males. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 13266, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 26.91% White, 72.22% Black or African American, 0.11% American Indian, 0.12% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 0.62% from two or more races.
