Sumter City is a city in the Sumter County, South Carolina, United States. The population of the city was 39643 as per the 2000 census data. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 38625, It is the eighth largest by population in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The city extends throughout a territory of 26.75 miē (69.28 kmē ), of which, 26.59 square miles (68.87 kmē) of it is land and 0.16 square miles (0.41 kmē) of it is water, it is the ninth largest by area in the U.S. state of South Carolina.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 39643 residents, 14564 households, and 10052 families in the city. The population density was 1491.2 people per square mile (575.76/kmē), making its South Carolina's 54th most densely populated city. In the city the population was spread out, with 27.8% under the age of 18, 12.5% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 17.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% who were 65 or older.
