Sumter City is a city in the Sumter County, South Carolina, United States. The population of the city was 39643 as per the 2000 census data. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 38625, It is the eighth largest by population in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The city extends throughout a territory of 26.75 miē (69.28 kmē ), of which, 26.59 square miles (68.87 kmē) of it is land and 0.16 square miles (0.41 kmē) of it is water, it is the ninth largest by area in the U.S. state of South Carolina.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 39643 residents, 14564 households, and 10052 families in the city. The population density was 1491.2 people per square mile (575.76/kmē), making its South Carolina's 54th most densely populated city.
