The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 23616, giving it the 24th largest population among Kansas's county. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1184.78 square miles (3068.57 kmē), of which, 1181.81 square miles (3060.87 kmē) of it is land and 2.98 square miles (7.72 kmē) of it is water, making it Kansas's fourth largest county by total area.
