Sully County is a United States county located in the United States of South Dakota. The population of the county was 1556 as per the 2000 census data. The July 2008 population estimate is 1356, It is the fourth smallest county by population in the U.S. state of South Dakota. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1070.36 square miles (2772.22 sq km), of which, 1006.9 square miles (2607.86 sq km) of it is land and 63.46 square miles (164.36 sq km) of it is water, it is the 29th largest by area in the U.S. state of South Dakota. It is ranks fourth in the size of its inland waterways in South Dakota.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1556 people, 630 households, and 443 families residing in the county. The population density was 1.5 people per square mile (0.58/kmē), it is the sixth least densely populated county in the U.S. state of South Dakota. There were 844 housing units at an average density of 0.8 per square mile (0.31/kmē). The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.99. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 25.5% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 24.4% from 45 to 64, and 17.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 105.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 108.5 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 1356, The racial makeup of the county was 1312 White, 0 Black or African American, 26 American Indian, 2 Asian, 0 Native Hawaiian, and 16 from two or more races.
