Sullivan County is a United States county located in the United States of New York. As of 2000 the population was 73966. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 76189, It is the 36th most populous county in the U.S. state of New York. It has total area of 996.85 sq mi (2581.83 square kilometre), of which, 969.71 square miles (2511.54 square kilometre) of it is land and 27.14 square miles (70.29 square kilometre) of it is water, makes it the 23rd largest by total area in New York.

The population density was 76.3 people per square mile (29.46/kmē), it is 20th least densely populated county in New York. There were 44730 housing units at an average density of 46.1 per square mile (17.8/kmē). The average household size was 2.5 persons, and the average family size was 3.05 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 24.9% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 25.4% from 45 to 64, and 14.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 96.5 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 97.3 females. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 76189, The racial makeup of the county was 86.91% White, 9.53% Black or African American, 0.31% American Indian, 1.59% Asian, 0.05% Native Hawaiian, and 1.6% from two or more races.
