It is 14th most populous in Connecticut. The census designated place comprises an area of 19.88 sq mi (51.49 square kilometre), of which, 17.59 square miles (45.56 square kilometre) of it is land and 2.29 square miles (5.93 square kilometre) of it is water, makes it the 17th largest by total area in Connecticut. It is ranks seventh in the size of its inland waterways in Connecticut.
