Stokes County, North Carolina is a county of the United States of North Carolina. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 44711 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 46171, It is 53rd most populous county in North Carolina. Its area is just over 455.89 sq mi (1180.75 sq km), of which, 451.84 square miles (1170.26 sq km) of it is land and 4.05 square miles (10.49 sq km) of it is water, it is the 57th largest by area in the U.S. state of North Carolina.

The population density was 99 people per square mile (38.22/kmē), it is North Carolina's 49th most densely populated county. There were 19262 housing units at an average density of 42.6 per square mile (16.45/kmē). The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 2.94. Age range in the county was well distributed with 24.5% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 31.4% from 25 to 44, 25% from 45 to 64, and 11.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.6 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 46171, The racial makeup of the county was 93.95% White, 4.8% Black or African American, 0.29% American Indian, 0.27% Asian, 0.06% Native Hawaiian, and 0.63% from two or more races.
