Stewart County is a one of the county from Tennessee's 95 counties, located in Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 12370. In July 2008, its estimated population was 13226, giving it the 15th smallest population among Tennessee's county. Its area is just over 493.2 mi˛ (1277.38 square kilometre), of which, 458.48 square miles (1187.46 square kilometre) of it is land and 34.72 square miles (89.92 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 43rd largest by area in the U.S. state of Tennessee. It is ranks fourth in the size of its inland waterways in Tennessee.

As of the census of 2000, there were 12370 people in the county, organized into 4930 households, and 3652 families living in the county. The population density was 27 people per square mile (10.42/km˛), making it the fourth least densely populated county in Tennessee. There were 5977 housing units at an average density of 13 per square mile (5.02/km˛). The average household size was 2.49 persons, and the average family size was 2.91 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 23.9% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 25.4% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 99.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.5 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 13226, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 12463 White, 307 Black or African American, 80 American Indian, 206 Asian, 6 Native Hawaiian, and 164 from two or more races.
