Its population was estimated at 5056 in July 2008, It is 68th most populous county in Kansas. It is spread over 727.71 mi˛ (1884.76 square kilometre), of which, 727.53 square miles (1884.29 square kilometre ) of it is land and 0.18 square miles (0.47 square kilometre) of it is water, giving it the 55th largest by total area among Kansas's county.

As of the census of 2000, there were 5463 residents, 1988 households, and 1457 families in the county. The population density was 7.5 people per square mile (2.9/km˛), it would be the 63rd most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Kansas. There were 2265 housing units at an average density of 3.1 per square mile (1.2/km˛). It has an average household size was 2.72 persons, and the average family size was 3.27 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 31.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 19.4% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.5 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 5056, The racial makeup of the county was 4860 White, 62 Black or African American, 71 American Indian, 14 Asian, 1 Native Hawaiian, and 48 from two or more races.
