Sterling City is one of the city of Rice County, Kansas, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. The population of city in 2000 stood at 2642 as per the Census data. Its population was estimated at 2535 in July 2008, It is the 99th largest in terms of population. The city has a total area of 1.45 sq mi (3.76 square kilometre), of which, 1.42 square miles (3.68 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 130th largest by area in the U.S. state of Kansas.

In the city the population was distributed as follows: 19.4% under the age of 18, 32.9% from 18 to 24, 17.3% from 25 to 44, 16.8% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 84.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 77.3 males. The racial makeup of the city was 95.42% White, 1.51% Black or African American, 0.76% American Indian, 0.68% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, 0.91% from two or more races and 0.72% Other races.
