Stephenson County is a county located in the United States of Illinois. In 2000, the population was 48979. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 46367, It is the 33rd largest in terms of population. Its area is just over 564.72 sq mi (1462.62 sq km), of which, 564.18 square miles (1461.22 sq km) of it is land and 0.54 square miles (1.4 sq km) of it is water, making it the 45th largest by size in Illinois.

As of the census of 2000, there were 48979 people in the county, organized into 19785 households, and 13471 families residing in the county. The population density was 86.8 people per square mile (33.51/kmē), giving it the 29th most densely populated county among the Illinois. There were 21713 housing units at an average density of 38.5 per square mile (14.86/kmē). The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.97. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.3 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 46367, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 41253 White, 3741 Black or African American, 111 American Indian, 394 Asian, 26 Native Hawaiian, and 842 from two or more races.
