Steele County is a county in the United States of North Dakota. The population of county in 2000 stood at 2258 as per the Census data. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 1795, making it the sixth least populous county in North Dakota. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 715.49 square miles (1853.11 kmē), of which, 712.36 square miles (1845 kmē) of it is land and 3.13 square miles (8.11 kmē) of it is water, it is the third smallest in terms of geographical size.

The population density was 3.2 people per square mile (1.24/kmē), it is North Dakota's 34th most densely populated county. There were 1231 housing units at an average density of 1.7 per square mile (0.66/kmē). The average household size was 2.45 people, and the average family size was 3.01 people. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 27.6% under the age of 18, 4.7% from 18 to 24, 23.1% from 25 to 44, 25% from 45 to 64, and 19.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 107.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 108.7 males. Its population was estimated at 1795 in July 2008, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 1759 White, 3 Black or African American, 15 American Indian, 1 Asian, 0 Native Hawaiian, and 17 from two or more races.
