Ste. Genevieve County is one of the 115 county of Missouri, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. The population of the county was 17842 as per the 2000 census data. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 17720, making it the 61st most populous county in Missouri. The county spans an area of 508.94 mi˛ (1318.15 square kilometre), of which, 502.39 square miles (1301.18 square kilometre) of it is land and 6.55 square miles (16.96 square kilometre) of it is water, makes it the 33rd smallest by total area in Missouri.

As of the census of 2000, there were 17842 people, 6586 households, and 4926 families residing in the county. The population density was 35.5 people per square mile (13.71/km˛), giving it the 52nd most densely populated county among the Missouri. There were 8018 housing units at an average density of 16 per square mile (6.18/km˛). The average household size was 2.66 people, and the average family size was 3.09 people. In the county Age distribution was 26.6% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 98.8 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 99.5 females. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 17720, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 97.33% White, 1.26% Black or African American, 0.34% American Indian, 0.21% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 0.86% from two or more races.
