Stanley County, South Dakota is a county located in the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. In 2000, the population was 2772. The July 2008 population estimate is 2703, It is the 16th smallest in terms of population. The county encompasses an area of 1516.99 sq mi (3928.99 kmē ), of which, 1443.28 square miles (3738.08 kmē) of it is land and 73.71 square miles (190.91 kmē) of it is water, giving it the 17th largest by total area among South Dakota's county. It is ranks second in the size of its inland waterways in South Dakota.

As of the census of 2000, there were 2772 people in the county, organized into 1111 households, and 775 families living in the county. The population density was 1.9 people per square mile (0.73/kmē), it is the tenth least densely populated county in the U.S. state of South Dakota.
