St. Marys County is a county located in Maryland, in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. In 2000, the population was 873341. In July 2008, its estimated population was 101578, It is the 12th largest county by population in the U.S. state of Maryland. The county extends throughout a territory of 507.14 sq mi (1313.49 kmē ), of which, 495.52 square miles (1283.39 kmē) of it is land and 11.63 square miles (30.12 kmē) of it is water, making it the second largest by size in Maryland. It is ranks second in the size of its inland waterways in Maryland.

As of the census of 2000, there were 86211 people, 30642 households, and 22306 families living in the county. The population density was 1762.5 people per square mile (680.51/kmē), it would be the 14th most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Maryland. There were 34081 housing units at an average density of 675.3 per square mile (260.73/kmē). The average household size was 2.72 people, and the average family size was 3.17 people. In the county the population was spread out, with 27.9% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 32.6% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 9.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 98.2 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 99.2 females. The July 2008 population estimate is 101578, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 81903 White, 15088 Black or African American, 350 American Indian, 2252 Asian, 73 Native Hawaiian, and 1912 from two or more races.
